One driver killed, another hurt when vehicles collide and flip over, SC cops say
One driver was killed and another was hospitalized after a Wednesday night crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:45 p.m. in Jasper County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
Both a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck and a 2012 Chevrolet Suburban SUV were driving north on West Frontage Road, not far from Exit 28 on I-95, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Gregorie Neck Road the Chevy ran off the left side of the road then overcorrected, causing the SUV to swerve back onto West Frontage Road and collide with the Dodge, Bennett said.
The Dodge then ran off the right side of the road where the SUV flipped over and crashed into a tree, according to Bennett.
The Chevy continued of the left side of the road hit a utility pole and overturned, Bennett said.
The Dodge driver, who was the only person in the pickup, died at the scene, according to Bennett.
The Jasper County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Dodge driver.
The Chevy driver was the only person in the SUV and was taken to an area hospital, Bennett said. Further information on the SUV driver’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the Chevy to originally veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
