One person killed in nighttime crash on South Carolina road, cops say
One person walking in a road was killed Sunday night in a crash involving a van, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at about 9:10 p.m. in Darlington County, said Master Trooper Joseph Rowell.
A pedestrian was walking in the southbound lane on South Fourth Street, according to Rowell. Near the intersection with Allen Road the pedestrian was hit by a 2023 Chevrolet van that was driving south on South Fourth Street, Rowell said. That’s about 10 miles from NASCAR’s Darlington Raceway.
The pedestrian died, according to Rowell.
The Darlington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.
Rowell said the Chevy driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt, or if nighttime conditions played a factor in the wreck, which continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through March 1, at least 106 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least one person has died in a Darlington County crash this year, and 33 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
