One driver killed in Sunday night crash on I-20, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed Sunday night in a crash on a stretch of Interstate 20 that runs through the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 8:45 p.m. in Lee County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

Both a 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2018 Mercedes-Benz van were driving east on I-20, according to Bolt. At the 111-mile marker the Harley-Davidson spilled onto the eastbound side of I-20 and was hit by the Mercedes-Benz, Bolt said. That’s in the area near the line separating Bishopville and Camden.

The motorcycle rider died, according to Bolt.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.

Bolt said that the van driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the motorcycle rider wore a helmet, or if the van driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the motorcycle to spill on I-20 was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 173 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least three people have died in Lee County crashes this year, and seven people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
