Crash on South Carolina road leaves one person dead, Highway Patrol says
One person was killed Wednesday night when a car and bicycle were involved in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at about 9:10 p.m. in Laurens County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
Both the bicycle rider and a 2013 Dodge Dart were heading south on U.S. 221, according to Glover. Near the intersection with Laurel Hill Church Road the Dodge collided with the bicycle, Glover said.
The bicycle rider was taken to an area hospital and died there, according to Glover.
The Laurens County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the bicycle rider.
Glover said the Dodge driver, who was the only person in the car, was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the Dodge driver was wearing a seatbelt, or if the bicycle rider had a helmet or any other protective gear, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 249 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least nine people have died in Laurens County crashes this year, and 24 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
