The Clemson basketball team has added another transfer.

Once again, it’s a productive front-court player from a mid-major.

Utah Valley forward Carter Welling has signed with the Tigers, On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos reported on Friday. Welling averaged 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game this season as a sophomore and is expected to have two years of eligibility left.

Clemson also confirmed Welling’s signing on Friday.

Welling played his freshman season at UC Irvine and took a big statistical jump as a sophomore at Utah Valley, which competes in the Western Athletic Conference.

He is Clemson’s second portal addition of the 2025 cycle. Former Nevada forward Nick Davidson officially signed with the Tigers earlier this week.

Coach Brad Brownell’s program is now up to eight scholarship players for next season after losing 10 combined to either exhausted eligibility or the transfer portal.

The Tigers are expected to keep using the portal, too, to fill out their roster.

Welling (6-foot-10, 225 pounds) gives Clemson another legitimate starting option in the front-court alongside Davidson, who’s also 6-10. Welling was the WAC’s defensive player of the year as well as a second-team all-conference pick in 2024-25.

Welling shot 47.8% from the field and also flashed some 3-point ability, shooting 35.3% from deep while taking 2.7 threes per game. Brownell’s best Clemson teams often include big men with shooting range (PJ Hall, Ian Schieffelin, Viktor Lakhin).

247Sports ranked Welling as the No. 23 power forward available in the portal and No. 107 overall transfer available. He wasn’t listed in On3’s transfer rankings.

The Tigers went 27-7 this season, setting school records for total wins and ACC wins, before getting upset by McNeese State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
