South Carolina freshman O-lineman to miss season with injury
South Carolina freshman offensive lineman Markee Anderson is out for the season, coach Shane Beamer announced Sunday night.
Anderson will have surgery this week on a knee, Beamer said, and is expected to return in time for spring practice. Beamer described the ailment as “something that’s been nagging him all summer. He’s been trying to fight through it. It’s just not healing like it needs to heal.”
It’s not an ACL or any other long-term issue, Beamer said.
“We felt like the best thing for him is to shut him down,” Beamer said. “Hate it for him. He’s going to be a big time player for us.”
The four-star signee from Dorman High School did not travel with the team to Athens for the game against Georgia over the weekend. He enrolled at USC in January and participated in spring workouts.
He is one of two Gamecocks who have been ruled out for the year. Linebacker Mo Kaba “suffered a left knee injury” in the opener against North Carolina.
Other injury news
Receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells left Saturday’s 24-14 loss to Georgia with a foot injury. Since the preseason, Beamer described Wells’ situation as a “lower-body injury.” On Saturday, however, he told CBS on the air that Wells was “done right now, maybe a broken bone in foot. Good news it is the one he had surgery on. He got a screw in it.”
Wells returned to the sideline a few minutes later, hopping on his right foot and stopping to visit with family members before taking a seat in the bench area. He was seen with ice on the left foot. He will see a specialist on Tuesday, Beamer said after the game.
“No update on Juice,” Beamer said Sunday. “We’ll know more on Tuesday.”
Wide receiver Ahmarean Brown (hamstring) and defensive ends Jatius Geer and Tyreek Johnson should be back for USC’s home game against Mississippi State on Saturday, Beamer said. Offensive lineman Cason Henry will still be out.
