Former Gamecock Meechie Johnson lands on NBA summer league roster, report says
A former South Carolina guard is getting his shot at the NBA.
Meechie Johnson has been added to the Miami Heat’s summer league team, per a report.
Johnson went undrafted in the 2026 NBA Draft, which ended Wednesday night. Johnson seemingly confirmed the report on X/Twitter Thursday morning.
“I come from Cleveland Ohio, I wasn’t suppose to come this far given everything I been through, but God! Thank you Miami Heat!” Johnson posted.
The NBA summer league is used for teams to evaluate their younger talent and each team is generally made up of rookie and second-year players. The complete summer league schedule has not been released by the NBA yet but the tournament will run from July 9-19 in Las Vegas on UNLV’s campus.
If Johnson performs well in the summer league he could land himself a training camp spot with the Heat (or another team) later this fall. Should he wind up making the Heat’s 2027-28 roster he’ll get the chance to play alongside recently acquired two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Meechie Johnson’s college career at USC, Ohio State
Johnson wrapped up his six-year college career with the Gamecocks in 2026. The Ohio native split his time evenly with Ohio State and South Carolina.
Johnson started his career with the Buckeyes. He spent two seasons with Ohio State from 2020-22 and played in 43 games while averaging 3.1 points per game.
The guard then transferred to South Carolina and blossomed immediately. Johnson started in all but one of the 63 games he played for the Gamecocks in 2022-24. He averaged 14.1 points per game, earning an All-SEC selection, and led South Carolina to the NCAA Tournament in 2024.
After the 2023-24 season Johnson found himself transferring back to Ohio State. This time though he played just 10 games and averaged 9.1 points.
Johnson came back to South Carolina for one final season this past year and led the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game.
