Gamecocks signee, local commit each elevated to four-star recruits

With the final round of All-Star games in the books, the college football recruiting rankings are starting to be finalized.

And the changes have been good for a pair of future South Carolina players.

Lineman Jovaughn Gwyn added a fourth star in the 247 Composite ratings, the standard for a player’s overall rating. Commit Bryce Thompson was raised up to a four-star by Rivals, which pushed his overall ranking to four stars.

Gwyn is a 6-foot-2, 291-pound lineman from Harding University High School in Charlotte. He’s expected to play guard at the college level, though defense wasn’t out of the picture, and was a late signing day pickup for Will Muschamp’s staff.

Thompson was an ultra-productive offensive player at Dutch Fork and Ben Lippan the past two seasons, and was at one point committed to Virginia Tech. He’ll likely start at defensive back at 6-foot, 180 pounds, but his skill with the ball in his hands could make it hard not to play some offense.

Thompson moved up from three stars on Tuesday, as he became a four-star from most of the biggest outlets. Rivals has him as the No. 222 player in the country. 247 has him at 284th nationally with four stars. ESPN has him as a four-star, but outside the top 300.
