Third Eye Blind rocks the stage Thursday
It’s been nearly 20 years since alternative rock band Third Eye Blind burst onto the music scene with hits “Semi-Charmed Life,” “Jumper” and “How’s It Going to Be.” Believe it or not, the band is still making music, and released its fifth studio album, “Dopamine,” this summer.
“Dopamine” is Third Eye Blind’s first album since 2009’s “Ursa Major,” and may be the last LP for the band – ever – if frontman and only remaining original member Stephan Jenkins keeps his word.
The band performs on Thursday, Oct. 8 at Music Farm Columbia.
To mark a potential farewell and to celebrate nearly two decades of 3EB tunes, here’s a list of some of the band’s best songs from each album.
1. “Semi-Charmed Life”
Album: “Third Eye Blind”
Released: 1997
What else happened that year: The first “Harry Potter” book was published; Princess Diana died in a car crash.
What we love about the song: That “Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo,” takes you right back to the ’90s every time you hear it.
Claim to fame: “Semi-Charmed Life” was once used during an episode of “Friends.” And if Chandler Bing can get down to it, we all can.
2. “Never Let You Go”
Album: “Blue”
Released: 1999
What else happened that year: Everyone still watched “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” and freaked out about Y2K.
Why we love the song: It’s a classic. Great for playing LOUD in the car because it’s so upbeat and catchy.
Claim to fame: “Never Let You Go” climbed to No. 14 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart after it was released. Sadly, it did not make “Now That’s What I Call Music! 3.” Remember those?
3. “Blinded”
Album: “Out of the Vein”
Released: 2003
What else happened that year: “Finding Nemo” was new in theaters; “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ended its TV run.
Why we love the song: OK, so some of the lyrics can come off a little stalkerish (“I let myself in though I know I’m not supposed to”), but the chorus, “When I see you, it’s like I’m staring down the sun,” is perfect.
Claim to fame: Nothing really, but you’ve gotta enjoy the music video of the guys goofing off backstage.
4. “Don’t Believe A Word”
Album: “Ursa Major”
Released: 2009
What else happened that year: Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the VMAs; Michael Jackson died.
Why we love the song: This album is not 3EB’s best, but “Don’t Believe a Word” is nothing to sneeze at.
5. “Everything is Easy”
Album: “Dopamine”
Released: June 2015
What else happened that year (so far): The world met Caitlyn Jenner; Zayn left One Direction.
Why we love the song: Frontman Stephan Jenkins knows how to balance moody lyrics with buoyant music that’s fun to listen to.
Claim to fame: It came out 18 years after “Semi-Charmed Life” but can still sit comfortably beside it.
