‘I’m coming home’: Former FSU pledge commits to Gamecocks

Defensive back Israel Mukuamu committed to the South Carolina football team on Saturday.

Mukuamu, who is now in Louisiana, previously starred at Berkeley High School in South Carolina. He decommitted from Florida State after coach Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M.

“I am officially 1000% Committed to the University of South Carolina!!!!” he announced on Twitter

Mukuamu (6-5, 187) is a three-star prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite rating that factors in all networks. He is expected to play safety for the Gamecocks.

Mukuamu took official visits to USC, Florida State, Indiana, Georgia and Purdue. He praised the relationship he built with Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.

“They talked about the opportunities I have if I went there as far as coming in and playing early,” Mukuamu previously told Phil Kornblut of the Gamecocks. “And the high level of expectations and the development from the coaches I would get.”

Muschamp shared with Mukuamu his thoughts on the Gamecocks’ progress and the program’s direction.

“First year he had six wins, this year eight wins, so you can see the program is rising,” he said. “Just the talent they are bringing in, the recruiting. And him being a defensive coach and the defensive players he and T-Rob have developed over the years. They said they’ve had multiple first round picks. And they said they need help at DB and they need to get longer and bigger at DB.”

USC has 19 public commitments, plus defensive lineman Tyreek Johnson, a Sumter product who greyshirted from last season. The team is limited to 25 signees, and at least one spot is taken because of tailback Ty’Son Williams going on scholarship after walking on.
