The story behind Jordyn Adams’ viral slam dunk video

It started off like other Wednesday night youth events do at Village Church in Blythewood with food, games and fellowship.

A tomahawk slam dunk changed the course of the night.

Blythewood High multisport athlete Jordyn Adams first electrified his friends inside the church gym with the dunk. Then video of the feat grabbed ESPN’s attention and had folks on the Internet buzzing.

“I have done 360s and things like that before, but this is probably be one of the best,” Adams said. “I didn’t think it would have this response.”

The video had more than 24,000 interactions on Adams’ Twitter page by Thursday morning and was picked up by ESPN and a number of national websites. The dunk even landed at No. 4 on ESPN’s SportsCenter’s nightly Top 10.

The “oh, my gosh” headlines followed:

▪  The website BallisLife.com teased it as a “vicious ‘Welcome Back To School’ poster dunk.”

▪  SB Nation went with, “High schooler throws down vicious tomahawk dunk that will make everyone but this poor defender scream.”

▪  USA Today said, “Behold one of the greatest posterizing dunks you’ll ever see.”

Here’s a catch. Adams, a junior in high school, doesn’t play basketball for the Blythewood Bengals. He’s a standout for the football and baseball teams. He’s being recruited by a number of colleges, including South Carolina, for football and baseball.
