You don’t want to miss this chili cook-off. Here’s why

There are three very good reasons to attend the 30th annual Chili Cook-Off in Five Points on Saturday, Oct. 21:

Chili.

Beer.

Music.

Not enough? Take it from Amy Beth Franks, executive director of the Five Points Association:

“The Chili Cook-Off is one of our favorite (and most popular) events in Five Points,” Franks said. “It’s a great way to spend your day – tons of different chilis, live music, and fun for the whole family.”

Need more convincing? Here are four reasons Five Points Chili Cook-Off needs to be a must-attend event on your calendar:

1. The chili.

There will be more than 30 chilis, with many varieties.

“What we love most about our chef teams is that they each provide their own unique recipes, of all different varieties and heat levels,” Franks said. “You can certainly expect some to really bring the heat!”

Chilis will be tasted by a panel of 10 experts and judged in the following categories: Overall Best Chili, Best Vegetarian, Best Texas Style, and Best Nontraditional. Teams also will compete Best Set-Up and the Taneyhill’s Group Therapy Silver Spoon Award for the most money raised.

2. It’s more than chili.

There will be live music with six bands playing from 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

Craft and seasonal brews will be available for purchase, and you can play corn hole.

The “porta-bar” on-site will have televisions showing football games.

3. Food trucks.

Even if you don’t like chili, you’ll enjoy this chili cook-off. A food truck rodeo will ensure that no one goes hungry.

Confirmed food trucks include Cold Stone Creamery (ice cream), Pawleys Mobile Eats (burgers and more), Ono Grindz (Asian- and Hawaiian-inspired street food) and Doggy Bagz (hot dogs, obviously).

4. Free admission.

Admission to the cook-off is free. Each chili sample is available for a $1 donation, so come prepared with dollar bills. (If you forget cash, there will be three change stations.)

“There’s always been something special about the Chili Cook-Off; there aren’t many events like it,” Franks said. “With free admission, tons of chilis, live music, a kids’ area, cornhole and a food truck rodeo, there is something for everyone.”
