Jessica Skinner grew up in Woodruff in Spartanburg County but has lived in Columbia for eight years.

A professional musician, she plays ukulele and sings full-time in her band, Prettier Than Matt.

The duo – the other half of which is vocalist and guitarist Jeff Pitts – say on their band Facebook page that their motto is “diversity and versatility combined with musical ability,” explaining that they perform with “rock ’n’ roll energy” and “acoustic accessibility.” They play lots of local shows, many for charity and fundraisers.

Last month, they released a new EP, “Uncover,” which the South Carolina Music Guide gave 4 1/2 stars, calling the album “proof … they know exactly who they are and what they want to sound like.”

Outside of Prettier Than Matt, Skinner says, “I love to crochet, drink hot toddies and watch ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’

EAT

I love Tombo Grille, Grill Marks, SakiTumi, Inakaya, Cellar on Greene, Cantina 76 and I could keep going because Columbia has a ton of great restaurants. I love all of these places not only because of the fantastic food, but also the wonderful service.

DRINK

116 State was my first coffee-slash-bar place that I fell in love with. I would usually get an Irish coffee or a hot toddy, and they would never disappoint. The Wired Goat and Loveland Coffee are also fantastic for a good cup of coffee. As far as bars, Bar None has always been a special place since I moved here. Recently, I’ve discovered the Kraken and Moriarty’s and enjoy them for their vibes and tasty drinks.

SEE

I take them to see my other musician friends at their gigs downtown.

LISTEN

If you enjoy the sounds of dogs barking, my front porch in Shandon is the perfect spot.

There are a plethora of venues who have great live music all over town on any given night. Music Farm, Tin Roof, Michael’s Cafe, Main Street Public House, Pearlz Upstairs, Delaney’s Irish Pub, Za’s on Devine are just the tip of the iceberg.

PLAY

If I’m going out, it’s early in the week since the bars aren’t crowded. Otherwise, I enjoy kicking back in my sweatpants and watching movies.
