And the Columbia area, apparently, loves a car wash.
A new car wash is being constructed near the heart of downtown Columbia, about a half-mile from City Hall, continuing a recent trend of car washes that have been announced or are under construction in the greater Columbia area.
According to city planning documents, a Big Dan’s Car Wash is currently under construction at 1027 Elmwood Ave., between U-Haul Moving and Storage and the Wardlaw Apartments. A construction crew and a crane have been at work on the site recently, and the Big Dan’s company website indicates the Elmwood Avenue location could be open by September.
Big Dan’s has car wash locations across the South, mostly in Georgia and Florida. The company has a number of monthly membership wash packages and offers various amenities, such as free vacuums, that are mainstays of modern car washes.
The Midlands has been flush with new car wash openings and announcements recently.
Time to Shine Car Wash has purchased nearly 2 acres of property at 2006 Gervais St., near Columbia’s Five Points, for a new wash facility (which is just a couple hundred yards from an existing Constan Car Wash). Time to Shine also has plans for a wash at the corner of Columbiana Drive and Harbison Boulevard, in the bustling Harbison shopping district near Columbiana Centre mall.
Tommy’s Express Car Wash opened this year at 4700 Devine St. in a spot that was previously a landmark for the historic 2015 flood. There’s a new ModWash is coming to Highway 378 in Lexington, near the Publix-anchored Hendrix Crossing shopping center.
And there’s a Take 5 Car Wash currently under construction on Augusta Road in West Columbia.
The new Big Dan’s Car Wash on Elmwood will be located on a busy, heavily trafficked stretch of road in the capital city. According to state Department of Transportation traffic count data, more than 46,000 cars per day traverse that section of Elmwood.
