Teen and 20-year-old arrested after a man was killed in Columbia, SC police say
A South Carolina man was killed on New Year’s Eve and two people, including a teenager, are facing charges connected to the shooting, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Lenny W. Corley, a 33-year-old Columbia resident, died in the Dec. 31, 2024 shooting at the Riverside Apartments, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said. That’s at 3245 Lucius Road, in the area near both the Columbia Canal and the Broad River.
Both 20-year-old Sean D. Simmons and the teenager were arrested last week, police said Monday in a news release. The teen has not been publicly identified because of his age.
Both Simmons and the teen face charges of murder, breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and criminal conspiracy, according to the release.
The teen will also be charged with possession of a handgun by person under the age of 18, police said. He’s currently being held at the Stanly County Detention Center in Albemarle, N.C., and is awaiting extradition to Columbia, according to the release. Information about why the teen was taken into custody, and if he faces any additional charges in North Carolina, was not available.
Simmons was arrested Jan. 3, and is being held at Richland County’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center after no bond was set, jail records show.
The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2024, after Simmons and the teen were involved in an argument with Corley, police said. Information about why they were arguing, or if they knew each other prior to the gunfire, was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Columbia police with the investigation.
