A Michigan man spent the last 10 years staying true to a lottery routine, and it finally paid off big.

“I have bought a Powerball ticket for one drawing each week for 10 years,” Robert Benaglio said, according to a Jan. 22 news release from the Michigan Lottery.

So, he purchased a ticket for the Dec. 23 drawing at a gas station in Metamora. This time, winning him a $1 million prize.

“I won the prize just before Christmas, but I didn’t know I was a big winner until I scanned the ticket on New Years Eve. The only word I can use to describe the feeling of finding out you’ve won $1 million is shocking. I think it’s finally starting to hit me and I’m just now believing that this is real,” Benaglio told lottery officials.

Benaglio said he plans to take a vacation, pay off his vehicles and save the rest. He also said he will continue a tradition.

“I still plan to continue my weekly ritual of buying a Powerball ticket,” he said. “I get $2 worth of daydreaming out of it each week, so why not?”

Metamora is about a 55-mile drive north of Detroit.
