Four-star safety flips commitment from South Carolina to Florida State

The first commit of South Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class has changed his mind.

Four-star safety Jernard Albrght — who became the Gamecocks’ initial 2027 pledge after a Christmas Day commitment — told Noles247 on Sunday that he’s flipped to Florida State.

Albright — the No. 12 safety in America, according to the 247 Composite Rankings —was supposed to take an official visit to Florida State next weekend and then head to South Carolina the week after.

South Carolina was the first Power-4 school to offer Albright, handing him an offer last May. A few months later, he told Rivals that South Carolina was the school standing out the most.

“I hear a lot from them,” he told Rivals’ reporter Chad Simmons in September. “(Defensive backs) coach Torrian Gray texts me and my mom a lot. He’s definitely a good guy, doesn’t lie, and is real about the program. He makes me feel like a top guy and I feel like he can develop players.”

A native of Springfield, Georgia, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound defensive back made 50 tackles and had a pair of interceptions as a junior — including a 109-yard Pick-6 back in October. He initially chose the Gamecocks over Georgia Tech, Michigan, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. Florida State didn’t offer him until September.

With Albright’s decommitment — and the April flip of four-star CB Aamaury Fountain from USC to Florida — South Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class is down to eight commits — none of which are defensive backs.
