Inmate dies after fight at SC prison
An inmate serving time for a Richland County armed robbery attempt died Saturday after a fight at a South Carolina prison, officials said.
Christian Ray, 22, died at 6:37 p.m. Saturday at McLeod Health in Florence, according to Lee County Coroner Larry Logan. He died at the hospital after being transported from Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning in Newberry, Logan said.
Ray died from injuries suffered in a fight at the prison, S.C. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sommer Sharpe said in an email Sunday. Additional details were not made available.
Ray was serving a seven-year sentence for an attempted armed robbery in Richland County, Sharpe said. He had been in prison since October 2014.
The incident remains under investigation.
Ray’s death comes just over a year after one inmate was killed and another injured during an incident at the same prison in June 2016.
In April, four prisoners were killed by two inmates at Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia.
