The South Carolina Department of Insurance advises anyone who suffers flood damage from Tropical Storm Debby to contact their insurance company or the National Flood Insurance Program as soon as possible but stresses safety is their first concern.
“Do not attempt to walk in or drive into standing water,” Michael Wise, director of the South Carolina Department of Insurance, said. “Before entering your home, make sure it’s safe.”
Here are the Insurance Department’s tips for filing claims.
- When you call your agent or insurance company, have the name of your insurance company (your agent may write policies for more than one company); your policy number; and a telephone number/e-mail address where you can be reached. Keep them informed if you change locations.
- Ask when an adjuster can be expected.
- If local officials require you to throw out damaged items before the adjuster arrives, keep a swatch or other sample.
- Separate damaged items from undamaged items. If necessary, place items outside your home.
- Take lots of photos of any water in the house and damaged personal property.
- Give receipts, if you have them, to the adjuster.
