5-star cornerback recruit with SC ties commits to Gamecocks football
For over 10 months, South Carolina has been circling July 1 as the beginning of a new era, waiting in anticipation for the moment it could officially flip to Nike.
The benefits of the Swoosh, anyone at South Carolina will tell you, are immense. Better footwear. Cleaner looks. Most visibility. And, well, being a Nike school was going to pay dividends in recruiting over time.
Turns out it only took 18 hours.
Just past 6 p.m. on Wednesday, five-star 2027 cornerback Joshua Dobson announced his commitment to South Carolina over Auburn, Michigan and Texas A&M, giving the Gamecocks their biggest recruiting victory in over a year.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound blue-chipper, per 247 Sports Composite Rankings, ranks as the No. 17 overall player and No. 3 cornerback in the nation along with being the top player in the state of North Carolina — even though he has yet to play a snap of football in the Tar Heel State.
Dobson spent the first three years of his high school career at Fort Mill’s Catawba Ridge before transferring to Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina in January. If he was still in South Carolina, Dobson would be second-highest-ranked prospect in the state only behind Irmo’s Jaiden Bryant (who committed to Miami).
Dobson also becomes the fourth five-star recruit to commit to South Carolina under coach Shane Beamer, joining WR Nyck Harbor (2023), OL Josiah Thompson (2024) and edge Dylan Stewart (2024). Offensive lineman Darius Gray (2026), who enrolled at USC this summer, finished as a four-star by 247Sports’ composite rankings but was rated as a five-star by other services.
South Carolina entered the week in a bit of a recruiting lull. Beamer’s 2027 class was ranked 57th in the nation, included just five four-star prospects and no one ranked inside the Top 150 of 247 Composite. Dobson changes not just that but perhaps the entire narrative and trajectory of this South Carolina recruiting cycle.
Dobson’s teammate at Hough, four-star safety Davion Jones, is projected to commit to South Carolina on Thursday. On Friday, Irmo four-star offensive tackle Nate Carson, the No. 6 player in South Carolina, will pick between the Gamecocks, Georgia and Colorado. Then on Saturday (July 4), four-star NC edge Jayden Broadie, who’s incredibly high on the Gamecocks, will make his decision.
This could be a defining week for Beamer and the Gamecocks. And even if it all comes to pass, Dobson will still be the gem of South Carolina’s class.
