Gamecocks sign Big 12 WR who started career at South Carolina
South Carolina and DJ Black are getting a reunion.
On Monday, 247 Sports reported that the Gamecocks have signed UCF transfer wide receiver DJ Black — who began his collegiate career as a walk-on for South Carolina in 2022.
As a redshirt junior for UCF in 2025, Black started in 11 games, catching 22 passes for 273 yards a pair of touchdowns. Only three receivers for the Golden Knights recorded more catches and yards.
An Inman native, Black starred at Chapman High, catching 79 passes for 1,445 yards and 19 touchdowns — even breaking Deebo Samuel’s state record for receiving yards in a game (270).
In his one season at South Carolina, Black didn’t see any game action but did run track for the Gamecocks’ indoor track team in the spring. From there, Black transferred to Division II Limestone — where the head coach was current Gamecocks WR coach Mike Furrey.
In his two years at Limestone, Black racked up nearly 1,200 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound pass catcher will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Black is the 24th player USC has got from the transfer portal and also becomes the third player to transfer from UCF to South Carolina this offseason. Golden Knights offensive lineman Carter Miller was the first to make the jump and, on Sunday, UCF transfer tight end Max Drag (a Chapin alum) also became a Gamecock.
